Newsflash- Chocolate Dragon sighting! Cake Idea

My heart beat a quick pitter patter when a picture of this cute little dragon came across a text message on my phone. Creating cakes like this or like a Lightning McQueen cake I spent intricate hours making for my son, tends to make me rethink the desire to advance my cake skills. To all you amazing individuals that create delicious masterpieces out of cake and frosting perhaps you have some tips to add to ours?

Tip #1 Freeze the cake after you make it. This makes it easier to carve into shapes.
Carve your cake
Tip #2 Think of frosting in layers. No need to complete the canvas in one take.

Tip #3 Use different cake tips for a different effect.
Cover with Frosting
Tip #4 This tip is for me. Patience my friend! I asked my friend at Topsy Turvy and she told me a cake she made probably took 6-8 hours and I am absolutely positive there are more extravagant cakes out there that take many more hours than that.

Tip #5 Invite lots of friend to eat and enjoy! Okay, let’s face it; that should always be the first basic rule when you make something with chocolate. :)

What is the most unique cake you have ever made?

Love the dragon! Me- cake maker- uniqueness… don’t belong in same sentence! I love watching cake competitions on tv… does that count?

I still have not watched one of those cake shows… perhaps one of these days when we actually plug in our tv.. Opps! The secret is out! :)

  2. Gina the cake looks awesome!! I think the most intricate cake I’ve ever made was a Big Bird cake for my son’s first birthday. :) What a joy! And you’re right… Patience is an ingredient in all cake making! Grace, peace and blessings, Carla

Did you stop after his first birthday? For my sons first birthday I tried the healthy route and did a honey whole wheat cake with yogurt frosting. The Lightning McQueen cake was for his second birthday. I have no idea what I am going to do next- perhaps enlist the help of my sister!

What a fun cake! I love the coins for effect. I know my son would just flip for this, and the coins would take it over the top. Nice work. :)

It was all my sister. Who know what is in her creative little brain sometimes. :) It is fun to see we are both creative, but very much in our own way.

  6. Wow you did an excellent job on both. I went back to look at the lighting McQueen cake. Let’s see the most unique on I ever made……………………..uh…………………… oh okay. I make some orange cupcakes for a red velvet recipe, I just made orange food coloring. The tops had those candy corn pumpkins on them. They were really cute ;-)

That Lightning McQueen cake is the only attempt I have made so far… I am sure there will be others, but it does take time. I have seen some amazing cakes out there. Thanks for coming by!

This dragon is incredible! You really can make anything out of chocolate. He almost looks too good to eat. Definitely saying almost because I can gobble anything down that is made of chocolate.

I wanted to invite you to share this project on my blog, Confetti Diaries, link party this week. I know my reader’s would enjoy such fun inspiration. We hope to see you there!
