Bike Ride in DC- Active to Peaces

When I tell people that I blog about chocolate one of the most common questions I am asked is how I can do it and not gain a lot of weight. Even though I love chocolate so much that I blog about it, I strongly believe in living a healthy life.

So I hope you don’t mind if I start ‘Active to Peaces’. I would like to share my love of the active lifestyle- ways to be more active, tips for fitting it in and my adventures in being active… so we can still eat chocolate.

As some of you may know I was recently in Washington DC. I don’t know about you, but I find it a little tricky to stay active when traveling, especially for business purposes. I did bring my running shoes and lap swimming gear just incase, but I found an entirely different activity that was an incredible experience.

The first morning I did go running. Besides, how many people can say “I ran past the White House”?

While I was there I observed several bike stations and bikes with the words, “Capital Bike Share“. Curious, I looked it up.

I wish that they had such an opportunity in my hometown! Capital Bike Share is this cooperative that has several bikes located at stations throughout the city. Individuals then pay a rental/ membership fee which is good for a certain amount of time. The coolest part is that you can ride your bike from one part of the city to another and just dock it at another station. Speaking as someone who has commuted on a bike in the past, half of the trouble is figuring out what to do with your bike during the day.

Next time I go to DC, or some other place with a bike share I am definitely planning on renting a bike for longer. I finally figured out the bikes by the end of the week and went for a ride my last morning there. Now I can say, “I rode past the White House… and the Jefferson Memorial… and the Washington Memorial” as well. :) Then I ate some chocolate.

  1. Oh DC is a great place to be active and biking around the nation’s capital is a fantastic way to do that! I used to live there and I miss it. Now I miss it even more!

You used to live there? Cool! Prior to visiting I never even considered living there, but I think I could survive. Thanks for dropping by!

What an amazing and brilliant concept! Easy to find “parking” and more fun than walking I’m sure.
Love the very last line of your post. ;)

Ya, despite blogging about chocolate, I do try to eat healthy and live a pretty good lifestyle- so I just wanted to share that. BTW, I did not mention this, but if you have fun pictures of exercising, or the chocolate delight after, please send them in and I will post them. Thanks!

I love to bike ride. Doing a ride is a city I visit would be the coolest thing ever. In many cities in Europe there are bike stations where you can use a bike for free for as long as you may need it… NICE huh!

    • Chocolate Mom says:

Hopefully, one day my city will be cool and have it too. I have not been to Europe (to stay) for about 15 years. I know, I know, it is time to go back. Have you made trip plans for Vegas yet? Is your hubby coming? Have a good day!

      • Susan Cooper says:

You would love the biking opportunities in Europe.

RE: LV, I have and I’m all set to go. I am staying ta the hotel they referred to because it was easy. My hubby is coming and we are treating I like a mini getaway… :D

  4. Paris has the same thing. We loved it. Traveling big cities by bike can be so fun — except during rush hour :)

I was just telling Susan how much I would love to go back to Europe! My husband and I almost booked a honeymoon bike tour over there… But then he broke his hand. :( have a good day!

  5. Rosey says:

That is a neat opportunity. And sooooooo much better than trying to find parking in D.C., especially the area you noted. :)

    Love the pics!!

    • Chocolate Mom says:

We did not have the parking battle because we were taxi, bike and walk most of the time… But one night I met up with my cousin and it did take a long time to find parking. But some things in life are well worth the effort. :)

  6. I am a big vacation/travel runner but I haven’t given much thought to biking on vaca. Great suggestion!

    • Chocolate Mom says:

Run or bike, I just feel it is the best way to explore a new location and get on the same level with the locals. :) Thanks for coming by!

I have good news. Did you know there are plans for a bike share program down town SLC? Fun, HUH. Same Idea.

Also the mode of travel you had is the only way to go in DC. It cost almost as much to board your car at the Hotel as it does to stay there. We took the Metro everywhere we went. My friend and I even got lost there.

I went swimming today. It’s been so difficult because my Epstein Barr/Mono virus has been out of control since last November. I’ve gained abt 30 lbs from inactivity and mostly sleeping, but I’m recommitting no matter what. Thanks for a great post!

  9. Paul says:

I have never been to DC but that sounds like fun running around or by the white house. I think it would be cool to run around some of the cool buildings they have there. I think if I lived there I won’t do it but it I visited there I might. The reason why I say that is because I go to the gym here and run. I don’t run outside here is Utah all the much. If I do run here is Utah it is that same trails that is it.
