How to Get the Skunk Smell Out of Your Dog

Really, there is nothing better than taking your dog out to do his last duty at midnight before you got to bed and having him get sprayed by a skunk. Okay, I am kidding- but I thought I would share my new found knowledge.

How it Happened

My husband took our dog out for the night and he thought he saw a black cat that had been harassing our cat. My husband let our dog go after it until that black object lifted a bushy tail in the air and started walking slowly side to side. At this point my husband realized from a distance that it wasn’t the cat and was indeed a skunk and called our dog back as fast as he could…unfortunately, the dog had already been sprayed a bit. Awesome. I love midnight adventures…. but not ones like this.

What we Did

Thank heavens for the Internet. What else am I suppose to do? There was no way I was about to let that dog back in the house if he smelled and I had no idea what to do about it. Per dailypuppy.com we needed to act fast. We wiped the skunk oil off (yes, you can see it) and then washed our dog with the suggested solution. The solution they recommended was 1/4 cup baking soda, 2 teaspoons of dish soap and 2 pints of hydrogen peroxide. They also said the recommended solution was flammable and to be careful. After washing him with this “miracle solution”, we rinsed our dog and then washed with regular dog shampoo and rinsed again.  The puppy was a trooper and did fine through the whole ordeal.

Thank heavens my puppy did not retain that awful smell- yuck. The only casualty was the dog collar that we ended up replacing. But I am okay not to repeat that midnight adventure again.

Awwww, poor dog getting assaulted by that stinky skunk at midnight. Not fun! Glad you were able to get the stink off of him quickly though. It’s good to know about that solution mix. I think everyone has those basic household items, so if this happens, no time is lost running to the store for them!

Happy you are here! Question for you… since I see that your site is vegetarian- what is your favorite way to cook tofu? My husband and I would eat more of it, but we struggle with a good way to cook it. Have a good week!
