This project was inspired by an item that has been in our hospital gift shop I have been looking at for a month. I thought the idea was so cute… and then one day I realized I could make it myself. So here is my version.
First I painted a wooden frame. To get this crackle effect as shown below I painted the frame the base color and let it dry. Then I covered the surface with Elmer’s glue and let it dry a few minutes. While the glue was still tacky I painted the frame with the contrast color. You can find the basic tutorial here. I also tried using a crackle medium but the Elmer’s glue turned out a lot better.

Note about the results. The larger cracks in the brown frame picture are due to a thicker layer of glue. The thinner cracks in the blue frame picture are due to a thinner layer of glue. Overall- it is fun to sit there and watch your paint crack after painting it!
