
5 Facts you might not know about Memorial Day
1- It was originally called Decoration Day.
2- New York was the first state to recognize the holiday in 1873.
3- The southern states honored their dead on a separate day until after World War I. Memorial Day was considered a northern states holiday.
4- It became a 3 day holiday weekend in 1971 with the National Holiday Act, it was originally May 30th.
5- In the year 2000 the National Moment of Remembrance was passed asking for all Americans to do something to observe Memorial Day such as a moment of silence or listening to “Taps” at 3 pm, local time.
