My child ate his dinner last night, covered in ketchup. He ate his dinner covered in ketchup multiple times… or mostly the ketchup. I have a good standard lunch and breakfast that I feed him, so I am not worried about his nutrition. But my husband and I are not ketchup fans. How can it possibly be that good? Why in the world would you want to dip your french fry in it, lick it off and then repeat until it falls apart? What is it about ketchup that makes food
so appealing? Or I guess it does not make food that appealing, sometimes my kid dips his finger in it, licks it off and does not eat much of his food sometimes.
I went looking for answers of course. The answer is brilliant. I have not bothered to look in my medical and nutritional research databases. I am hoping that the government has not funded a study on why kids like ketchup so much. Then again, I love a good laugh! Anyway, TLC states that the reason kids like ketchup so much is their taste bud’s do not taste the same way and many foods can taste more bitter. The sweet addition of ketchup can be that link to actually eating the food than not. Anyway, if you would like an interesting link, click HERE.

I must confess, one of my favorite cartoons from years ago was a boy at the dinner table looking at a piece of liver. The caption “Liver? Do we have any industrial strength ketchup?” Ketchup does make liver tolerable and as it was an inexpensive cut of meat and my dad liked it, we were served liver on a fairly regular basis growing up..
I think my parents got away with trying liver once… I am not sure I could cover that up with ketchup even now… that and brussel sprouts. If anyone knows a good brussel sprout recipe, I would love to hear it!
That’s a smart answer to a difficult qusetoin.
